January '10 in Buenos Aires

Chinatown in Buenos Aires? You bet. Find it at Arribenos and Mendoza, near Plaza Barrancas de Belgrano, or Estacion de Trenes Belgrano C.

You can find pretty much whatever you'd like from fish in the market to beef being pushed down the street. Andrea checks out a car full of orchids. I'm munching at a walk-up counter and later Andrea dines at the Chinese grocery store counter.

Here's just a couple of photos that show one of the smaller markets. There are lots of food and dining options in Chinatown as well as imported goods from the Orient. A great get-away for a lunch and shopping!

Not far away is one of our favorite indoor food markets in Belgrano.

Not to be outdone, a French bakery operating in a building with a 100+ year old brick oven produces lots of different bread and pastries.

To expand your culinary choices, how about a bit of horse meat, usually served like cold cuts.

In Buenos Aires the most common restaurant is some variation of the 'parilla' or grillhouse where beef, pork and sometimes lamb are cooked up over wood fires. Other common finds are regional Argentinian foods consisting of beans and the local sausage (chorizo) served in a stew. Pizza is popular and common. It's a more difficult job to find seafood, however there are Peruvian, Italian and Spanish restaurants where fish can be found. French, Lebanese and Moroccan food, Sushi and other Asian delights are to be found as well. Of course, the younger locals are enchanted by McDonalds and Burger King until they get older and affluent enough to dine at Kansas. (Yes, there are some American chains floating around here.) Andre and I both find it refreshing to frequent restaurants owned and run by the locals.
